Do You Need a Mid-Day Reset?
Do You Need a Mid-Day Reset?
I don’t know about you, but when I worked in the corporate world, I spent my mornings frazzled, never feeling caffeinated enough, and usually overwhelmed. Stress is the opposite of relaxation and we typically feel stress when we are moving too quickly throughout our day, feeling like there isn’t enough time to accomplish everything. I have since realized that the more relaxed I am throughout my day, the more energy I have-even without my previous caffeine addiction.
That mid-day slump happens because we’re sprinting throughout the day. We need to rest and recuperate. That’s why we end up turning to something that will provide us with momentary pleasure because we’re not getting enough pleasure throughout the day...we’re just stressing. Ever wonder why you’re craving a sugar-laden latte or craving snacks in the afternoon? This is why! So, what can we do to de-stress and re-charge instead of eating our weight in chocolate?
Welcome the 5-5-7 breath. I know what you’re thinking. Ridiculous…breathing can’t get rid of my deadlines and the endless to-do list. However, the shortcut to turn off stress and activate a psychological relaxation response is conscious breathing. It literally takes two minutes to de-stress the body. Even when you are feeling chaos throughout your day, using this well-known breathing technique will help.
The 5-5-7 Breath Technique
· Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
· Begin by breathing slowly through your nose for the count of 5.
· Hold your breath for 5 counts.
· Exhale out of your nose for a count of 7.
· Repeat this at least ten times, for a total of about two minutes.
Rather than letting overwhelm and to-do lists interfere with your breath, try to focus on counting. This is an amazing tool to help improve relaxation anywhere and at any time. The technique relaxes the nervous system, which leads to better focus, improved digestion, and helps you to feel more energized. I do it a few times throughout my day and I have found it particularly helpful to re-center myself when I’m feeling overwhelmed, unfocused, or anxious.
